In Between Midnights works by Elaine Wong As a child, Elaine loved to paint. Her passion for art was then however stifled by school, and then the corporate world that demanded years and years of her time and dedication. The urge to paint suddenly revisited Elaine last year, and while she was buying her art supplies at a local stationery shop, she met a person who created a 30-day art movement that intrigued her.. Elaine took a month off work to join the program that required her to produce, at the end of 30 days, 40 completed pieces of art on canvas, and since then claims that painting has become something between a habit and a necessity. The first few days into painting weren't as productive as she’d hoped; what mostly came to mind were random swirls that at that point did not make much sense. By the second week of letting her mind wander, her dormant thoughts of everyday things—books she read, films she watched, conversations with friends—that resurrected rather unexpectedly, begot the formation of shapes that then turned into stories, which prompted her to really paint. The inspiration and time to paint come to Elaine more naturally these days. What she manifests in her art are mostly her spontaneous expressions, illustrated from an objective point of view, save for a few pieces that she painted in an emotional state. Art has become therapy for whenever she is at her lowest, that she now would rather paint, than call a friend to give vent to her feelings.
In Between Midnights is Elaine’s first solo exhibition.
